Green sapphire

Green sapphire remains little known, and that is part of its charm. It offers the hardness of sapphire and a palette running from forest green to blue-green.

Where the green of sapphire comes from

Green sapphire is a corundum, like all sapphires. Its colour comes from iron. It often results from a mixture of very fine blue and yellow zones, which the eye perceives as green. This is why two green sapphires can lean, one towards blue, the other towards yellow.

What gives a green sapphire its value

CriterionWhat we look at
ColourA vivid, luminous green. Many green sapphires are dark: the lightest and most saturated are the most sought after.
HueA pure green or a blue-green, very fashionable, depending on taste.
ClarityWe expect a stone with no inclusion visible to the naked eye.
CutA careful cut avoids the dull zones common in dark stones.
TreatmentUnheated or heated, according to the report.

Origins

Thailand is known for its green sapphires, often linked to deposits of basaltic origin. They are also found in Australia, Nigeria and Madagascar. Blue-green sapphires come from several of these deposits.

Why choose a green sapphire

Green sapphire offers an original alternative to the more classic green stones. Harder and more resistant than an emerald, it suits a ring worn every day very well. And for a given budget, it often allows a larger stone.
